India's onion exports rose marginally to 17.72 lakh tonne during Apr-Nov of the ongoing financial year and total shipments are expected to surpass the last year's level.
The govt said it will discuss with stakeholders next week about the new scheme 'Operation Greens' announced in the Budget 2018.
India will allow unrestricted export of onions, the government said in an order, as prices of the politically-sensitive vegetable fell over a third in a month.
The MEP for onion has been reduced to USD 700 per tonne from USD 850 fixed in November, as per the commerce ministry.
Retail onion price have risen to Rs 50-60/kg in some parts of the country but the government said it is a "temporary phase" and the rates will cool down by the month-end.
The country's onion production is estimated to decline by 4.5 per cent to 21.4 million tonnes in the current 2017-18 crop year.
"To check the hoarding of onion, the date of stock limit of onion has been extended from 31st Dec 2017 till 31st Mar 2018," Paswan said.
Inflation based on wholesale prices accelerated to 8-month high of 3.93% in November due to a sharp rise in onion prices, govt data showed.
India’s retail inflation likely breached RBI’s 4.0% medium-term target in Nov after unseasonably heavy rains sent food prices soaring, a Reuters poll showed.
Onion and tomato prices are expected to cool down in retail markets in next 15-20 days with arrival of fresh crop, according to Pattanayak.
