After a positive start, the 30-share Sensex advanced to a high of 35,806.97, but soon turned negative and hit a low of 35,430.11. It finally ended at 35,470.35.
The BSE Sensex slumped over 219 points to close at 35,470.35 today amid a weak rupee and continuing trade spat between the US and China.
At 12.46 pm, the wider Nifty50 of NSE traded at 10,799.80 points, down 22.05 points or 0.20 per cent from the previous close of 10,821.85 points.
Benchmark Sensex managed to garner a modest 67.46 points to close at 35,689.60 and the broader Nifty rose marginally by 4.15 points to end at 10,821.85.
Benchmarks weathered volatility to end sharply higher today, propelled by a late-session surge as investors snapped up healthcare, telecom and financials stocks amid mixed global cues.
The Sensex rebounded over 257 points to close at 35,689.60 while the NSE Nifty went past the 10,800-mark in volatile trade today, with institutional investors lending crucial support.
Stocks surrendered early gains to finish with losses today as lingering worries over global trade and lack of definitive domestic triggers held investors back.
Benchmark Sensex gave up early gains to end 115 points lower at 35,432.39 today on losses in healthcare, capital goods, metal and auto stocks.
FII flows have seen a bumpy ride so far this year, with a meagre investment of $15 mn, while DIIs continue to invest more aggressively into the Indian equity market.
The 30-share Sensex stayed in the green throughout and hit the day's high of 35,571.37 on a flurry of buying.
