    Britain's IWG gives three suitors more time to make takeover offers

    London: London-listed serviced office provider IWG (IWG.L) has given three of its four suitors more time to make firm offers or walk away from bids for the company, the firm said on Saturday. 

    TDR Capital, Terra Firma and Starwood Capital now have until Aug. 7 to declare their intentions after IWG asked for a deadline extension from the Takeover Panel regulator. The suitors had faced a cut off of 5 p.m. London time (1600 GMT) on Saturday to make firm offers. A fourth suitor, U.S, firm Prime Opportunities, has not been allowed any more time by IWG.

    IMF's Lagarde says Argentina 'unequivocally' making fiscal progress

    Buenos Aires: Argentina is “unequivocally” making progress on its goals to cut its fiscal deficit as part of a $50 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde said on Saturday.

    Lagarde told reporters at the G20 meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors in Buenos Aires that IMF staff consulted with Argentine officials after June’s inflation level of 29.5 percent printed above the target band, but that Argentina’s inflation goals were “attainable.” “We have respect and encouragement for the policies that are being developed by the government of Argentina,” Lagarde said.

    Trump says 'perhaps illegal' for lawyer to tape client

    U.S. President Donald Trump said that it was “perhaps illegal” for a lawyer to record a client, a day after reports his onetime attorney had recorded them both discussing buying the rights to a story by a woman who said she had an affair with Trump.

    “Inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyer’s office (early in the morning) - almost unheard of,” Trump tweeted, in a possible reference to an FBI raid on the office of his former lawyer Michael Cohen in April. “Even more inconceivable that a lawyer would tape a client - totally unheard of & perhaps illegal. The good news is that your favorite President did nothing wrong!” Trump added.

    Russia and Qatar discuss S-400 missile systems deal TASS

    Moscow: Russia and Qatar have been in discussions about a possible sale of S-400 missile systems to Doha, TASS news agency cited the Russian envoy to Qatar as saying on Saturday.

    He also confirmed media reports that Qatar and Russia had signed a deal on supplying Qatar with small arms, such as Kalashnikov assault rifles, and anti-tank weapons.“As far as the air defense is concerned, the S-400 systems and so on, there are talks about this, but there is no concrete conclusion,” Nurmakhmad Kholov, the ambassador to Qatar, was quoted as saying. Kholov also told TASS the Qatari Energy Minister Mohammed al-Sada will take part in Moscow’s energy conference in October.

    Trump not trying to intervene in currency markets: Mnuchin

    Buenos Aires: U.S. President Donald Trump is not trying to influence currency markets, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Saturday, reiterating that a strong U.S. dollar reflects a strong U.S. economy and is in the United States’ long-term interest. 

    Mnuchin told reporters in Buenos Aires for the G20 meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors that both he and Trump fully support U.S. Federal Reserve independence. Trump has broken with precedent in recent days with comments criticizing the U.S. dollar’s strength and the Fed’s monetary policy.

    Kremlin says Russian, French leaders discuss humanitarian aid to Syria

    Moscow: The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed joint humanitarian efforts in Syria, particular in the eastern Ghouta province, during a phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Saturday.

    On Friday, France sent 50 tonnes of medical aid to government-controlled eastern Ghouta in Syria after Russia agreed to facilitate its delivery, raising hopes for future aid efforts.

    Police constable abducted by militants in J-K

    Jammu: A Jammu and Kashmir police constable, who was on leave, has been abducted by unknown militants from his residence in Kulgam district, a police official said on Saturday.

    Constable Saleem Shah was abducted from his residence in the Mutalhama area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir last night, he said. Security forces have launched a manhunt to trace the abducted policeman, the official said.

    Iran supreme leader says "obvious mistake" to negotiate with US: Website

    Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday it would be an “obvious mistake” to negotiate with the United States as Washington was unreliable. 

    “The word and even the signature of the Americans cannot be relied upon, so negotiations with America are of no avail,” Khamenei said in a meeting with Foreign Ministry officials, adding that negotiations with Washington would be an “obvious mistake”, according to his official website.

    New Delhi: Freight rates were not available as truck transporters' strike continued for the second day today.   

    The truckers' key demands include reduction in central and  state taxes by getting diesel under the GST and reforming the "flawed and non-transparent" toll collection system.

    Cricket: South Africa out for 124 as Sri Lanka eye sweep

    Colombo: South Africa conceded a first innings lead of 214 runs when they were bundled out for just 124 on day two of the second and final test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Saturday.

    Skipper Faf du Plessis top-scored for the tourists with a fluent 48, while Quinton de Kock contributed 32 as South Africa once again capitulated to the home side’s slow bowlers and failed to reach the 150-mark in the series. Akila Dananjaya (5-52) and Dilruwan Perera (4-40) combined to run through the tourists, who lost all 10 wickets to spin after the home side added 74 runs for the final wicket of their first innings to reach 338 all out. Sri Lanka won the first test in Galle inside three days to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

    Two CRPF troopers injured in J&K firing

    Srinagar: Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were injured in firing by militants on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, police said. 

    Militants fired at the CRPF party in Bamzoo village while they were patrolling on the Anantnag-Pahalgam road, police sources said. A cordon and search operation is underway in the area.

    Former BJP MP Chandan Mitra, 4 Cong MLAs join TMC

    Kolkata: Former Rajya Sabha member of the BJP, Chandan Mitra, and four Congress MLAs in the West Bengal Assembly today joined the ruling TMC in presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. 

    The Congress MLAs who joined the TMC are Samar Mukherjee, Abu Taher, Sabina Yasmin and Akhruzzman. Mitra had resigned from the BJP a few days ago. All of them joined the TMC at its annual Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata.

    Two police officers killed in gun attack in Russia's Dagestan

    Moscow: Two police officers in Russia’s volatile Muslim-majority Dagestan republic were killed on Friday when their patrol was attacked by gunmen, a police spokesman said. The republic borders Chechnya, where Moscow has waged two wars against separatists since the Soviet Union broke up in 1991, and security forces there often face militant violence. 

    “One was killed at the spot, another died in hospital when gunmen attacked police patrol from a car,” the spokesman said. The number of the attackers was not known. In February, a man shot into a crowd leaving a church in Dagestan, killing five people and wounding at least five others.

    Fiat, Ferrari boards to meet on Marchionne succession: Report

    Milan: The boards of carmakers Fiat Chrysler (FCHA.MI) and Ferrari (RACE.MI) will meet separately on Saturday to discuss succession plans for Sergio Marchionne, who is chief executive of both carmakers and has been on medical leave, Automotive News said. 

    The report, citing people familiar with the matter, also said Louis Carey Camilleri, a Ferrari board member and former chairman of Philip Morris International, would be named Ferrari’s chief executive. Fiat Chrysler and Ferrari declined to comment on the report.

    Army foils infiltration bid in J&K

    Srinagar: An infiltration bid was foiled by the Indian Army on the Line of Control (LoC) on Saturday leading to a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, defence sources said. 

    Alert troops challenged a group of militants in the Tangdhar sector of the LoC earlier in the day, escalating into the gun battle that was still on at 11.30 a.m, Defence Ministry sources said.

    Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase forms political action committee

    Coinbase has formed a political action committee (PAC) to raise money to spend on U.S. elections, the cryptocurrency exchange said in a filing made public on Friday.

    Coinbase’s newly established PAC had not yet raised money as of June 30. In May, Coinbase said it would revamp its trading technology and create a new suite of services to attract more institutional investors, including hedge funds and high-frequency trading firms.
